Nicola Wilkinson

PGCertVetAnA, BSc (CVN), DipAVN (Small Animal), DipHECVN, RVN, TAA, TAE

Nicola is a RCVS Registered Veterinary Nurse (RVN) with 23 years experience in the veterinary industry having worked in first opinion and specialist practices across the UK and Australia.

Nicola is passionate about gold standard care and best practice within veterinary nursing, and has completed a BSc (Hons) in Clinical Veterinary Nursing, Diploma in Advanced Veterinary Nursing (small animal) and more recently a Post Graduate Certificate in Veterinary Anaesthesia and Analgesia. Nicola has a keen interest in pain management, anaesthesia and emergency and critical care.

Nicola strongly believes that veterinary nurse students are the future and strives to teach them to be motivated to learn, stay current and generally to keep being awesome!

This intensive six-week course dives deep into the critical aspects of anaesthesia management. You’ll gain a comprehensive understanding of the entire anaesthetic process, from pre-anaesthetic assessment to recovery, through a blend of theoretical knowledge and practical application.

  • Week 1: Pre-Anaesthetic Assessment & Considerations
    Learn to evaluate patients effectively to anticipate and mitigate risks before anaesthesia.
  • Week 2: Anaesthetic Drugs
    Explore the various drugs used for pre-medication, induction, and maintenance of anaesthesia, understanding their mechanisms and ideal use cases.
  • Week 3: Anaesthetic Circuits & Flow Rates
    Master the correct setup and use of anaesthetic circuits, ensuring optimal flow rates and patient safety.
  • Week 4: Monitoring Equipment
    Become proficient in using advanced monitoring equipment to maintain a safe anaesthetic depth throughout surgical procedures.
  • Week 5: Complications
    Identify and manage potential anaesthetic complications, enhancing your ability to respond swiftly and effectively.
  • Week 6: Recovery from Anaesthesia
    Ensure a smooth and safe recovery for every patient by understanding the best practices and interventions during the post-anaesthetic phase.

Participants should allocate approximately 10 hours per week during the course. An additional six weeks at the end of the course is provided to complete any outstanding tasks.

Are there any prerequisites required to enrol in this course?
No specific prerequisites are required, but the course assumes a knowledge level equivalent to that of a newly qualified nurse.

What support is available to participants during the course?
Support is available via phone, email, and Zoom appointments with the Lead Educator.

How are assessments conducted throughout the course?
Assessments primarily include MCQ or drag-and-drop tasks that are auto-marked, with unlimited attempts allowed. The course also includes written assessments that help design practical documents, like protocols, for use in clinics. Detailed feedback is provided on written assessments to assist in refinement.

Is there interactive content, and if so, what does it involve?
Yes, the course includes two interactive online Zoom sessions focused on applying learned concepts to clinical scenarios and simulations.

What are the technical requirements to participate in the online components of the course?
Participants need reliable internet access (such as NBN) and a computer. While mobile devices are supported, using a computer is recommended for easier access to reading and viewing online resources.

Are the Zoom sessions compulsory?
No, attending the Zoom sessions is not compulsory, but they are a crucial part of the course. These sessions are designed to help you better assimilate new knowledge into clinical practice. While recordings of the sessions will be provided, attending live is highly recommended. The interactive nature of these sessions means that merely watching a recording will not be as beneficial as participating in real time.
