Subjects:

  1. The Avian Nursing subject is your introduction to the world of avian care. This module focuses on the specialised care and handling techniques required for birds. You’ll gain insight into avian-specific health concerns, proper handling, and monitoring. Avian Nursing provides you with the essential skills to care for our feathered companions effectively.
  2. Nursing Reptiles: In Nursing Reptiles, you’ll explore the unique needs of reptilian patients. This subject covers handling, nursing care, and understanding reptile-specific health issues. You’ll become proficient in temperature regulation, dietary considerations, and more, ensuring that you can provide expert care for reptilian patients.
  3. Nursing Rabbits & Rodents: Small mammals like rabbits and rodents require specialised care, and that’s precisely what you’ll learn in Nursing Rabbits & Rodents. This subject delves into the distinct anatomy, behaviour, and nutritional requirements of these animals. You’ll develop expertise in handling and nursing these delicate creatures, ensuring their well-being in clinical settings.
  4. Enrichment: Enrichment is a fundamental aspect of modern veterinary care. In this subject, you’ll explore the art and science of providing stimulating and engaging environments for animals. Learn various enrichment techniques that promote mental and physical health, reduce stress, and encourage natural behaviours. Enrichment is a crucial part of enhancing the quality of life for animals in captivity.

Assessments:

  • Each subject has between 1-3 video assessments to complete. In your last subject, you will complete enrichment plans for your chosen species, bringing your knowledge together. All these assessments will have Nurse Educator feedback supplied to further your learning.

Nursing Case Logs:

  • Logs of cases where you have been involved in the nursing care of exotics and wildlife.

Please Note: There is an Australian Wildlife Nursing subject in development which will be offered as an alternative subject once released. This may better suit those in QLD where rabbits are prohibited to be kept. Once released students will be notified.

Course Duration

You have 6 months to complete your course requirements. Up to an additional 12 months can be arranged for a fee.

Suitability

To be successful in this course you need to be a qualified Veterinary Nurse (in Australia or overseas) or have over 2-3 years of experience working at the same level as a nurse who is qualified.

You must be employed in a veterinary clinic to have access to the case load necessary for your assessments.
