If you love assisting in surgery, getting patients ready for surgery and caring for surgical patients postoperatively, then the Certificate in Professional Veterinary Nursing (Surgical) has your name on it. This course will expand your surgical knowledge so you can smoothly run the surgical day and provide top quality care to your patients. The subjects are designed specifically around surgical nursing.

Your first two subjects Surgical Nursing & Instrument Care & Sterile Supply will expand your knowledge on everything from proper skin preparation and sterilisation, through to procedure knowledge and how to run the theatre. Following on from this, you will study Scrubbed Surgical Assisting to learn how to scrub in to assist the vet, pass instruments and provide haemostasis. Your last subject is Wound Management & Dressings and you will learn about wound care, lavage and debridement, selecting dressings and applying bandages.

Assessments: 

  • EACH SUBJECT HAS BETWEEN 1-2 VIDEO ASSESSMENTS TO COMPLETE.
  • YOU WILL COMPLETE A WRITTEN CASE STUDY BRINGING ALL YOUR KNOWLEDGE TOGETHER AND WOUND CARE SCENARIO ASSESSMENT.
  • ALL THESE ASSESSMENTS WILL HAVE NURSE EDUCATOR FEEDBACK SUPPLIED TO FURTHER YOUR LEARNING.
    Nursing Case Logs: Log 10 surgical cases as a scrubbed assistant, and 10 wound management cases.
Course Duration

You have 6 months to complete your course requirements. Up to an additional 12 months can be arranged for a fee.

Suitability

To be successful in this course you need to be a qualified Veterinary Nurse (in Australia or overseas) or have over 2-3 years of experience working at the same level as a nurse who is qualified.

You must be employed in a veterinary clinic to have access to the case load necessary for your assessments.
