Professional Development Course
AVNAT Registration Points: 10
Non-Accredited
Intermediate Level: This course is useful for those new to veterinary nursing, those with a few years experience, and those more experienced nurses wanting to brush up on their knowledge as well as learn more.
Monitoring anaesthesia is a large part of the Veterinary Nurse’s job. This subject introduces students to the foundations of anaesthesia – how to set up and test the equipment, what circuits to pick and when, calculations, and other factors that can influence how stable our anaesthetics are. You’ll also learn how the drugs we use affect the body, patient warming techniques and important and why premedication is necessary. We also explore analgesia specific for surgical patients.
Judging anaesthetic depth and monitoring techniques are covered, from manual monitoring to equipment such as pulse oximetry, blood pressure, capnography and ECG. You’ll also learn how to classify ASA statuses, and recognise and respond to anaesthetic complications.
Want a wee little taste of what you’ll learn? Read our articles on Patient Warming during Anaesthesia or Changing Soda Lime: When should it be changed.

The Australian Veterinary Nurse and Technician (AVNAT) Regulatory Council has allocated 10 AVNAT CPD points to this continuing education activity.
