Students undertaking this short course should have at least a Certificate IV level of knowledge under their belt. Not qualified? That’s ok, you can still enrol. Owners and carers may also find this information very useful for when they have to take their avian pet or foster in for treatment.
In Australia, we have an abundance of bird life. It is no wonder that domestic birds are a popular choice for many pet owners. This short course will provide you with essential information on commonly kept bird species. You will cover the important fundamentals on housing and husbandry, anatomy, nutrition and general healthcare across the first half of the course.
The second part of this course will focus on nursing the avian patient in the clinical environment. This will provide vital information for clinic staff to be prepared for the feathered patients entering the clinic. You will cover common diseases, providing physical examinations, anaesthesia, fluid therapy and radiography as well as common nursing interventions. Whilst this section is very veterinary clinic focused, students that are not in a clinic will find this information very transferable to assisting them in wildlife shelters and caring roles as well.
The Australian Veterinary Nurse and Technician (AVNAT) Regulatory Council has allocated 5 AVNAT CPD points to this continuing education activity.
